The Department Store Poem by Rich Reitz

The Department Store

Been coming here
Since I was a child.
The Toy Department,
Which gave me such pleasure.

To Sporting Goods
And Automotive
As a teen.
Life was exciting then!

Over the years came
Clothing, Shoes,
Appliances and
Housewares.

Paint, Plumbing, and Hardware.
Then Electronics as life added
New technology.

But, over the years
The merchandise has become
Too complicated to deal with,
And the quality
Has been cheapened.
Nothing seems worth the price any more.

Now I stop at the Pharmacy,
Pick up some extra-strength medication,
And pray that it will
Soon end the pain.

I hope the line moves quickly.
I can't wait much longer,
I think,
As I stand here
Waiting to check out.

Man, you sound like you're as old as I am! But I see that you are not. Few people are. Well written, in any case. I enjoyed reading it. thanks for sharing.

Well, I am almost 61. I remember going to Kresge's in Williamsport, PA BEFORE there was Kmart, W.T. Grant's, J.J. Newberrys and Woolworths. My grandmother worked at Montgomery Ward and I followed her years later. I watched my favorite place of employment lose department after department until Corporate finally ran it out of business. I also remember when Christmas was more like the one portrayed in the movie A Christmas Story. Back then it was more than just a commercial money-making enterprise.
