The Hardest Cut - Poem by Sam Manzi

The cut was made with words spoken true
Through the shield of self-preservation I had made with un-skilled hands,
I had not taken material to make the device, or advice on how to construct it
I instead created it out of my own fabric
A weave self indulged and missing key composition
Weaknesses made reality by the ease at which the strike penetrated, the depth it caused
The blood ran dry almost as soon as it flowed
For it drew the life past my lungs and out of heart before I hit the ground
The earth wrapped around my lifeless shell, as you once did
Nurturing, re-assuring… soon to break me down, without sound and to come together as one
Soil and bone
Heart to heart
