    This is an incredible piece of poetry! Unfortunately two semesters of Russian history were not adequate to comprehend the depth of this piece. Very high praise for Yevtushenko.

    First published in The USSR in 1962 - the same year in which Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's 'One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich' first appeared in an edited version in Novy Mir.
