The Love Of Guarded People - Poem by Nakul Sood

Is this what life is?
A journey from sleep to sleep
From dream to dream,
From feeling too shallow,
To feelings too deep.

My faith is confounded
The acts of their love
Knowing that I do not believe
In anything I feel.
I and it, are hollow,
And this is my sorrow, that
The actors do their lines,
And the actors do their lines.
Can we be loved if not intoxicated?
It is too painful to think—
All I know is
You made the move for me.

I turn to the Wise Man
For his wisdom,
Which he kindly bestows on me,
While I am confounded, because
His wisdom isn’t really mine—
And eventually, the inevitability
Of Time takes over,
And my courage and my life
Are acts of incomplete thought.

So, how would you like to live?
With your legs tightly crossed,
Thigh over thigh confounding
As you crack your shell
And go on expounding.
I have no problem with actors
They must do their lines,
But must they do their lines?
Your clear albumen flows out,
You love honesty and hate pretense,
And it confounds me because I wonder
If the cracks are cracks
Or their order too precise and homogenous.
If there are two things I know—
Life is enigmatic, and
The actors do their lines.
Isn’t it sad?
