The Night You Called - Poem by Elizabeth Rebel

You called
to let me know
it was over
on the phone

“It’s not your fault, ”
you say
well,
of course it’s not

I, on my bed
your voice
on the other end
sounds fading

“I love her, ”
you admit
okay,
I know you do

There was…
was something
to say but
I can’t remember

“We can still be—”
you stop
because
no, we cannot

You hung up
the phone fell
to the floor
had I let it go?

“Goodbye, ”
my voice whispers
that’s
all I have to say

Breaking up is sad, esp on the phone, you're got the sentiment just right, great narration too.
