The One That Got Away

we stood on the rented patio
while the party went on inside
you knew the groon from college
and i was a friend of the bride

to my surprise, you took my arm-
a gesture you didn't explain-
and we spoke in whispers, as of we two
might imitate the rain

why does that evenings memory
return with this night's storm
a party twenty years ago
it's disappointments warrm

i watch you merge into the group
aloof and yet polite
we didn't speak another word
execpt to say goodnight
