The Rain And I (Combat Veteran) - Poem by Daniel Cervello

I lament to you beneath the rain
Confined in darkness - adrift on pain
A slave to them; my thoughts run free
Their flood will be the death of me

The mud is thick, cold and deep
And i know that neither dawn nore sleep
Shall free me from these chains of ice
All have a soul and must pay its price

My mind hangs heavy - drenched with dread
A great crown of rage adorns my head
I stare afraid...lost in the night
Thou no longer do i mourn the light

For wretched heart inside my breast
Does give me life but take my rest
I'll have the thunder now instead
And leave the hearth behind and bled

With that

each flash - each lightning strike
Removes my need for the morning bright
It breaks the old and new apart
It frees me from my evil heart...

The whirling winds replace my will
So too the soul that seeks to kill
Reborn again as steal and lead
I have no fears since care has fled

With tempest cherished as a friend
And no more dams for me to mend
Old rage erodes along with pain
At last they melt into the rain

Now one are we the rain and I
Both love and hate are gone inside
In endless peace i'll now abide
Since i've become the clouded sky

Poet's Notes about The Poem

My acceptance of my struggle.I changed, leaving something behind but also took something with me. Its like waking dreams...or nightmares depending on how you look at it. I find myself learning to live with it and things and everything in between. Please forgive the errors both mechanical and grammar wise. It was written at a time of great duress from both at home and where I was. I was struggling with what was before me and what I felt inside on a personal level. I want to present it to you as it was written at the moment

Daniel, as Kelly said below, it's a 'powerful piece': both your poem and your note. Thank you for sharing
    Be blessed
    Ciao
