The Snort - Poem by P.D. TAYLOR

i called mom today
she'd left a message,
sounded sad
she hadn't heard from dad,
i felt bad

the conversation began
catching up on the family news
here's the story on dad
he called, he's fine
he's coming down to see you in a week, he said
but you know how things get,
oh, you do,
and you hate to hear it from me

the conversation took a sharp turn
she's coming east
oh great i'll be there in october too
working on my art project
(have you ever heard a snort of derision?)
that was my first
the snort stabbed

it told of all the childhood creative impulses
stomped
laughed at
it reminded me of all that i'd done that wasn't me
to please and not receive anything like
that snort

and then i cried
not for now, because now i've passed that need to please,
but i cried
for the little girl
