The Unknown - Poem by Karnail Singh Heirwale

The Unknown

Man is after the unknown
In science, religion and literature
If mentally equipped
He can undertake the journey
To reach somewhere
Provided the somewhere
Doth not become a still point
Religion began to flirt with everyone
And made the means an end unto itself
Hence poetry, fiction, a quest for the unknown
That remained confused
With the One
Omniscient and omnipresent
Imagination, so to say, poetry
Subverted the subverter
Hellenism gave a shock
To the puritan conscience
The boa constrictor hung round
The neck of man
And shut the doors
Of the metaphor,
Of the unconscious,
Of the fiction
That man is.
