Then Way Back When - Poem by Vision Ghost

Soon I’m going to be in my last year of my twenties
Thought I’d see how far I’ve come in so many journeys
From one country to another and yet I’ve been nowhere
Of so many days pain, days of laughter, days of free air

Back to where I grew up in a Cornish village in Trispen
I went to school and hated everyday, so bullied yet again
They said it was ADD and I couldn’t find comprehension
Guess my mother knew better saying it’s an imagination

Remember moving there at five years old and being scared
Though my memory before is when I got bricked and scarred
Father was in the RAF and we barely ever got along or agreed
Thank god that much has changed, always there for every plead

The climbing frame in the playing field watching my brother
Fly around on a Honda 250, I went pillion and found nature
Had my first kiss at nine and it blew me away she was beautiful
Heaven knows where she is now and to recognise is doubtful

Went back a few years ago; they all said how much I’ve changed
Old memories flooded back and then the recognitions exchanged
Going from dodgy jerseys my mother made to biker jackets now
Could all see it had been years and it was written across my brow

Before I had left to go Basingstoke in Hampshire and didn’t fit in
Country boy to the big bad city and bullied more to yet imagine
Leaving that damned school which I hated so much everyday
Finally went to college and got drunk with not much more to say

Smoked my first joint at sixteen and couldn’t understand why
Felt like crap as it did nothing for me being so very high
I would rather be so in love than drugged up to my eyeballs
Never had a lot of friends but the ones I had were so cool

Then onto the internet in Wales and met a girl in a chat room
Fell so in love I thought I would one day be the handsome groom
Before for so many years before drifting from job to job to job
Including my time in the army where I trained with a violent yob

Before I landed in Ireland and I guess it pretty much end’s here
Single with a beautiful daughter who, I shall save from all fear
And do my best as a father as my hair grows longer and longer
Looking forward to my first tattoo and bike I so now hunger
