There Will Be Poetry - Poem by Eric Birdsall

My pen and paper fight,
But the only winner is you,
As the pen lays down these words,
A story will be heard.

And Tonight,
Just before midnight,
The room will go black,
And when they restore the lights,
The paper will lie with the pen pressed so tight,

Yeah Tonight,
You’ll get what you’d expect,
So don’t expect anything less,
Then what you hope to see,
Even though it’s only poetry.

Maybe I’m crazy,
And you don’t see it like I do,
But if it were up to me,
I’d hide if I were you,
I never said it would be pretty,
And I’m pretty sure you’d agree,
But when this fight is over,
There will be poetry.

Through the sweat, and tears,
That makes it hard to see,
I can promise you this,
There will be poetry.

Even if these words are my last,
This is how you can remember me,
I’ll sign my gravestone before I rest,
And sign it, “There Will Be Poetry”
