Thing - Poem by Dylan Charles

What's that over there?
That thing,
A thing! That one over there!
Can't you see it?

It's red and white and blue
It's joyous, hearty and shrew
It is everything and everything is it.
Come come, have a look!

See here friend,
Wondrous isn't it?
It won't cost a jot,
you'll never find another better

All I require
just a little tiny something,
a wee little shiny
locket of your soul.

I mean
you don't use it do you?
you won't even notice its gone,
It's annoying, troublesome, gets in the way

You don't think so?
Why I'll show,
I'll show you what it's like,
Come now, don't be shy.

See here in my hand
see how it squirms
see how it wriggles,
all those thoughts
all those feelings,

terrible aren't they?
now I can take those away
give you something new

Something that doesn't squirm,
something that doesn't wriggle
it'll purr and preen,
shine and dream!

Put aside these quibbles,
I know what's good for you
everyone has it
and so should YOU

Poet's Notes about The Poem

Just came to me after reading Dr. Seuss to my little sis, how we value ourselves through owning material things. But that's not how things should work, we shouldn't give ourselves up for the latest piece of gadgetry or prize just so we can feel fulfilled. Our souls are intertwined with the outside and not be lured by the chummy advert outside our door.
