This Age - Poem by jeh chikalu

we’re in the age of disposables
pesticides to the seeds of life
in aluminum cans and plastic bags
you can have your cake and eat it too
in disposable sheaths and one night stands
slam bam n thank you maam

my mother used to wash my ass
with her work worn hands
now I don’t soil my fingers
when there is disposable diapers
my father used a fountain pen
for twenty seven years
i bought a ball point one last night
which may not see the light of tomorrow

use it for a day
and then throw it away
cause its cheaper to buy
than reuse or recycle

were in the age of readymade
bow your head to the law of averages
and shape your feet to the shoes they make

you'll develop a taste for what they dish out
in fancy packs and advertising – watch out
they could even sell your soul for a song

electronic gadgets at our fingertips
do everything and leave you free
to exercise on electromechanical contraptions

were in the age communication
the t.v., the telephone, email, the fax machine
no need to look each other in the eye
easy to live life a lie

were in the age of genetics
they’ll splice your genes and make you queen
bxxtxrd wont be a bad word anymore
(it really never was anyway)
test tube babies and surrogate mothers
and orphaned children on the streets

were in the age of obsolence
in built in men and machines and things
even in governments and human relationships

indisposable waste disposable syringes
the fear of communicable diseases
arthritis and cancer and aids
the curse of the new generation

still we give in to conspicuous consumption
excel in the art of pretentious living
thank you please
favours granted for a palm of grease
