To You Who Cost Me So Much

Pang of my heart
That triumph
Over a thousand adversaries’ sword wounds
Come you to rend me,
Come you to rend my brave, big heart in two,
That innumerable enmities pounding against its walls couldn’t shake?

Little flicker of lightning
That came disguised
Like Glory on an Angel’s Head

Will you fall and devastate
The very nest where I gave you lodgings,
The most warm of nesting places
The depths of a true heart? !

Yes, you are that!
Not bias, unjust prejudice, arrogance, nor loathing
Not even bitter hate,
But more powerful than these all
Even as with lofty names we remember you
Even as we stand, bow, fall prostrate
To your sublime power
Even then you strike, you Cruelty Absolute!
When in your deadliest form:
UNREQUITED LOVE.
