Too Late To Try - Poem by John Ashton

It's been a few weeks now
I'm still holding strong
But to hear her voice
Is all I long

She wouldn't do the basics
Like she said she would
If she really loved me
Doing these she should

Her life, right now, is upside down
Life put alot on her plate
She turned her back on me
She chose our fate

She must think my life is easy
I sit around all day
With not a care in the world
Oh, how I wish it was this way

She is why I'm here
To make better my life
Her parents blessing I could have
To make her my wife

But the death of her friend
And the loss of her toy
Her acquaintance boyfriend
Has put her mind in a void

She walked away
When I needed her most
The love I thought we had
Is now more a ghost

I'm gone for a year
My country I defend
In this desert wasteland
Now she wants to amend

I go on patrols everyday
Get mortared everynight
I wear 120 pounds of gear
And she thinks this is right

I see no one I love
No friends from home
110 degrees all the time
And she left me alone

She knew how I felt
How I wanted that kiss
She says I pressure too much
Now she's gone to abliss

If she only knew
How hard it is
To be over here
So much I miss

Maybe she doesn't care
Maybe she never will
Maybe she never has
Until I get killed

Then maybe she'll care
Then maybe she'll cry
Then maybe she'll love
But it's too late to try
