We Were There - Poem by Cally A. Nixon

Your chest moved,
with each and every breath...
Your eyes stayed closed,
as if in death.

The week we spent,
on that hospital floor...
We realized how much we loved you,
but so so much more.

We realized how much,
we depended on you...
We depended on how you made,
a promise and would follow through.

We saw you go through,
the siezures and blood pressure drops...
We were there,
when your heart fully stopped.

We were there when,
the life left your body...
We were there when,
the machines proved you were dead.
