When Was The Last Time - Poem by Ismim Putera

When was the last time,
you come and visit me?
There were still some kangkung behind here,
I pulled them and make sambal on sunny days.
Don’t worry, back there I still have some keladi,
And some bushes of serai,
Come inside, feel the shade,
I know you won't stay for long,
I know I won’t be here for long.

When was the last time,
you sit and stand in here?
But now the dust dances, on the wok and pot,
the boiling kettle, the curry soot,
Count the cracks or the scanty smell of the
mouldy tables.
I can't keep wiping! It’s getting windy,
The rain will come soon.
I will put some pails to drain the water.

When was the last time,
you slept and dreamed about me?
It was a long time ago,
when you and your brothers were small,
my old zinc now is filled with holes,
light slipped through them,
time dripped through them,
Hope you read the regards that I casted
into the wind.
