While Waiting For Fortune Poem by Ajibola Adeoya

While Waiting For Fortune

Poverty smiled at me
I gave her a wink
told her am married to life
and she is a beach
so, she should not even think
she is coming home with me
Thank goodness!
she didn't rebuff, my bluff

I was at this bar having a drink
My glass was half empty
when this waitress walked up to me
from her tag, I could see her name was Destiny
I gestured, raising my glass, ' Martini'
from the look in her eyes
I could tell, that was only a wish
so, when she said, she did no mans' bidding
I knew exactly, what it means.

So, I sat and stared into space
I wore a blank expression and couldn't fix my gaze
I reminisce on my thing with Luck
a fair maiden, good tidings she brought
My only problem was, you never know,
when she is not going show up
I tried several times to propose but she stood me up.

Now, time was really running late
It is a quarter to eight
and I still haven't seen my date
it was, then I remembered Faith (you all know Faith)
it was more of love with foresight
rather than at first sight
but she was all about the ritual and oath
she wanted me to trade my soul
I really did give it much thought
but in the end, it didn't work
though, we still keep in touch
I was on a rebound
when I flirted with the idea
of a romance with Heresy
or maybe it was just the Hennessy
funnily enough,
I wasn't even falling in love. (chuckles)

Now, It's eight O' Clock
and it seems, time is up
I was about to take my leave
when, I felt a light touch on my shoulder
and alas! ...there she was
'you could have called'
