You'Re Not The Captain Of My Life - Poem by Sandra Dodd

You made me cry though I never
let you see that you have that power
From the hour before you arrive
dragging behind you my anal retentive mother
I get all knotted up inside
sick, hurried in preparations

Your not the Captain of my life,
I have done everything you ever wished?
Let you make every choice, bless my every move
from birth so my name you would not curse?
Twisted myself into the very little pond
you wish me to swim in?
So small I nearly drown everytime you are around

In life you are supposed to wish me happiness
such bliss, you think I could even pick my own husband
but instead I get expectations
Ones that cant be met, not even by yourself
while you point the way for me
The perfect way as only you see it Captain

Your not the Captain of my life
dont come here causing me so much strife
Just stay in your perfect world
where no one weighs more than a deck hand
leaves a foul their bath towel
when tending to their husband
A perfect place where all your space
is ship shape, all hands on deck
with military respect, sir yes sir,
How high do I jump for you now
and all your how now brown cows

No more
I am done with pleasing one
who can't bend to see
pain caused, injury to myself
with your rules and expectations
