Your Kiss Goodnight - Poem by Joshua Otey

Another teardropp to dampen this floor
Another night of raising voices and I can’t scream anymore
Another glass is thrown but still I miss
On the surface this is war but inside I never wanted this

Could this be, just routine

This is just what we do
Cause this is what we’re used to
And when silence is the best thing you could say
And your kiss goodnight is thank you
For not killing me today
What we once had has gone away

Another day when our eyes never tried to connect
Another way to decide if each other’s touch makes us sick
Another thought of another, a key to get out
What we got is each other and a past we can’t live down

Could this be just routine

This is just what we do
Cause this is what we’re used to
And when silence is the best thing you could say
And your kiss goodnight is thank you
For not killing me today
What we once had has gone away

There’s only so much skin could take

Your eyes used to light so bright
Your arms were open so wide
From the sight of my face
Can we change anything, please?

I don’t want all of this
To end like we never wanted
To feel to touch to caress too much

There’s only so much skin could take

Now you wanna hold me tight enough to stop my breath
You wanna rub my skin just to scratch away what I have left
Cause you think you never seen what you say I’ve covered up
So if you love me baby, tell me now, you’re loving what?

You’ve seen all of me
You believed all of me
Time has come, line is drawn
To stay to go how may we know…

If the chalk outline is of us holding hands
Doesn’t matter, either way we killed our chance
To be the answer to each others dreams and plans
How about one last…

Before we give one final smile
Move on and live in our heads for a while
Who didn’t see this coming, we dragged it out
We slit our own wrists with what’s not talked about

There’s only so much skin could take…

…take me back to when your hold was the perfect fit
Take me back to when the argument was worth every word of it

(this is about a relationship. and knowing when it has gone too far)
