Give Me The Italian Family

I wish I knew the answer to this human condition
This frailty, insecurity, the misty thin ego
Is it themselves that they don't believe in
Is it a doubt that descends at three a.m.
When questioned they are found wanting
Scattering before the light of their own souls

Give me the Italian family, the smack on the head
The derisive abuse and the retort in kind
The screaming and laughing, the pantomime mocking
The sarcasm and derision lovingly exaggerated
No room for vanity or a flashy new fashion
A bulls eye for theatrics and merciless mimicry

These are my people not offended, not offend-able
Unlike the sophisticates that bruise oh so easy
Give me the Italian dinner, a circle of loyalty
Sensitive to life's sorrows and setbacks and pain
Loudly celebrating the moment in hurricane fashion
Please forgive if I forget we're not all the same
