International Tiger Day:Let Tigers Nurse Woods, Woods Tigers - Poem by Aniruddha Pathak

Without woods tigers scarce can live,
Sans tigers woods cannot survive,
Tigers then save a wood,
Woods work for tigers' good,
Both each to each tends to nurse,
Alone, each is helpless worse.

The transliteration of this verse from Mahabharat's Udyog Parva is given under:

nirvanah vadhyate vyāghrah
nir-vyāghram ćhidyate vanam|
tasmāt vyāghrah vanam rakśhet
vanam vyāghram cha pālayet ||

The symbiotic relationship between tigers and woods is beautifully brought out here. What is noteworthy is: such awareness was prevalent 5000 years back when people were conscious about environment protection and when forest cover was very high in India.

    Thank you so much, dear KM. Today's TOI says that the tiger count has gone up quite appreciably.
    And India has nearly two-third of the tigers of the world. A tiger saved is a portion of a forest saved.
