A diplomat's brat, R.C.Appleton was nearly born on a plane, but her mother managed to make it to Queen Charlotte's Hospital in Hammersmith in time, all the way from the Cold War and Romania. After time spent in various schools abroad, she came back to England and eventually got a scholarship to Benenden School in Kent. From there she went on to Exeter University to read English. When she graduated from there, she already had another scholarship to study until she was 27 years old, which she did here and there all over Europe. Meditations For The New Year

The year runs out, time turns, and the knife cuts,
The moment stops, the breath in heliopause
Is held, the glasses darken, cigar butts
Are all that now remain, the lost hours’ cause
All but forgotten, as a calendar’s
Long torn and sweat-stained, old and dog-eared stub
Is all that’s left of loves and hates, our wars
The stuff of gossip, rumours. Round this hub
The madding crowd pulls murmurs, twists them round
Their tongues, imaginations and desires
Run riot in the dusk, old words unbound
Past nakedness to dust in ancient fires
