'There are many shades of subtlety. Some ways are as subtle as a drum roll on an eyeball.'
I was a barber for 45 years. One learns much when dealing with the public. I once had a client who told me, as he pointed to his sideburns, '...and get this pubic hair off my face.'
I replied, 'Well, don't worry about being subtle as a drum roll on an eyeball. I get it. 'He looked back at me, not knowing whether to laugh or not, and burst out laughing. My own subtlety was understood and all was well. I haven't been as lucky with some of my other subtle plays on meaning.
