Fallen Knight

Smoke wafts from the nostrils
of a dragon,
And spirals up and up,
The wicked teeth curving over a scaly lip.

In gold-crusted claws
he clasps a pearl,
That glitters and
Reflects the firelight.

Over the hill
comes the knight
In cumbersome armor,
On a horse of pale sorrel.

But he is blinded by the
shimmering piles of gold,
His sword falls astray,
And a bellow of flame is his end.

The dragon curled contentedly
on his bed of riches,
And only the plume of the helmet
Of the digested knight remains.
