from 'Dreams and Visions'

As sun gently warms and dries
drips and drops still fall from rainspout
...

from 'Dreams and Visions'
to Gloria

In a dream last night
...

'And when they had sung a hymn…'
—Mark 14: 26a

You sang, Lord(!)
...

Because of what you have done
every dawn can be as this one—
as fresh, as clean, as full of expectancy and color.
...

A snatch of Mariachi music
as I pass a hotel window
summons tropical colors
of plants and clothes
...

I've been praying for friends and family passed
for their warm reception to God's eternal bosom
thinking of them as shadows of what they were.
...

A Monday morning. Early spring.
No work today—nor worries.
Setting out to walk three errands
he is greeted by a house finch singing.
...

from 'Dreams and Visions'

Free of the usual—
what it requires
...

Send strong winds, O God
and sweep away
the hatreds and the hurts.
...

Don't know why
but looking at the lawn beneath the apple tree
from my seat beneath the arbor in our backyard—
the mixture of longish grasses and clover
...

Mid-morning. Monday. College campus.
Spring semester done.
Few are here
with all its trees, bushes, flowers
...

1 Cor 1: 25

When Hitler ruled Berlin
the bees went out and in.
...

In early light
a street or so ahead
a body walking
much in silhouette—
...

The calendar tells
that spring is still
a wistful distance away.
...

from "While Passing Through"/Fall

Crisp air—caw caw caw—
riot of changing colors—
...

It's snowing seeds!

From all the elms
with graceful limbs
...

from 'While Passing Through'/Summer

Summer morning sky.
Behind the clouds overhead
...

For Claude
the shimmering light
on water and on flowers.

better spinners—

Glen Kappy Biography

I wrote my first bio for Poemhunter.com (PH) in 2016 when I started posting poems here. Then I revised it a bit in 2018, and overhauled it in 2022. For some reason or reasons I can't pinpoint exactly, it's come to me to revise it again today. First, for those who might be curious about this, yes, I've published in a bunch of periodicals—most of them permanently defunct—and a bunch of books with quite limited runs, none of them self-published by me. Which brings me to why I post poems in PH. The reasons I can identify are 1, poems are to share, and I want to share them; 2, I want my poetry deposited somewhere else besides the hard drive on this computer I'm typing on; and 3, not a reader of poetry magazines myself, I don't want to try and figure out what pleases their editors. When I'm introduced to poets I like, I'll check out from the library or buy a book of theirs and go through it. Recently it came to me to write a poem about why I write poetry, which is now posted here in PH and which I'll copy below. I am purposely not explaining my poetry here. I feel like explaining a poem is like having to explain the punch line of a joke—once you've done that you've taken the discovery, the "aha, " the fun from it. However, if you have a question or something else related to poetry, feel free to send me a message here in PH, which I will answer in time. Be aware I don't spend a lot of time in PH these days with the demands on my life and my resistance to sitting more than I have to in front of a computer or any other kind of screen. June 2024 Why I write Poetry To create. Because words have texture, flow, shape, melody no less than stone, paint, wood, music… Because the relish of others working in this craft was infectious—and I have yet to be cured. Because creation—people, plants, animals, the heavens… continue to fascinate. Because ecstasy, grief, delight, wondering, remembering prayer, confession, affirmation… need an outlet. Because time too fast too slow in the march of days is blessedly lost in its birth. Because above below within and without in all of this I am human and want/need to connect.)

The Pull Of Poetry

I got there
just before it closed
and checked out
the book of poetry
I had on hold

and took it
to my car
and opened it—
the key unturned
in my ignition—

and read… and read…
till all was in blue shadow
and the chill insistent
on my neck
and shoulders.

Glen is an expert in theistic studies. He knows the Bible and its wonderful teachings. As such, he is quick to grasp the deep wisdom of the scriptures. I have always been very happy when he comments on the Vedas, Upanishads or any story from the Indian philosophy and religion.

Glen, I 'm so fruustrated by the new PH format. I wanted to share a lot of my feelings about HE SANG, one of my favorite portraits of Jesus as an ideal human being. This is the kind of poem which shows prayer doesn't ask for 'things'
