I was a wolf north of the Arctic Circle
when I read Broken Fang.
I was Joe Hardy with a bomb at my feet
when I read While the Clock Ticked.
I was Maggie Holloway and buried alive
when I read Moonlight Becomes You.
I was Kin Sackett in the savage wilderness
when I read The Warriors Path.
I was Prince Prospero, unaware of the horror to follow
when I read The Masque of the Red Death.
I was Navajo police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn
when I read The Blessing Way.
I was Carletta Carlyle who dealt with illegal aliens
and immigration agents when I read Coyote.
I was Skye Fargo who didn't give in to bullies
or drunks when I read The Trailsman.
I was Tony Castillo, a fisherman and skin diver
when I read Treasure of Acapulco
I am nobody when I watch TV.
Reading increases a person's intelligence.
So, when reading I am improving myself.
If a book falls on my head, I can only blame my shelf.
Very good poem. I have read all of the Tony Hillerman books and most of the others you mentioned. I was lucky enough to meet Hillerman once in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Terrific guy!
Spock, I really like this poem! I love the way you bring the characters into your life. I liked the ending, but then saw the words on the photo and wished you had not included the photo. I wanted to think that line belonged to you.
Thanks, Grace. Well we get " inspiration" in various places. I actually started it with the picture. The poem turned out quite a bit different than I imagined when i started it.
(comment part 2) I knew it! The other one's name was Jim Chee. Too bad Hillerman passed away about 11 years ago. He was one of my favorites. The last three books you mentioned, I have not read. The book is almost always better than the movie or TV show they make from it. Great ending to the poem!
I really like this poem. I have read the first four books you mentioned, but not the fifth one, The Masque of the Red Death. I have read ALL of the Tony Hillerman books featuring Joe Leaphorn and that other Navajo tribal policeman, whose name escapes me at the moment (and I will remember as soon as I submit this) .
A sincere tribute to the authors whom you have read. " Reading make the full man" . So carry on
Thank you very much. The only problem is the more I read the more sleep I need.
This poem has not been translated into any other language yet.
I would like to translate this poem
Reading is improves life. Without reading, one depreciates. A beautiful poem. Kingsley Egbukole
