I Dare You

I
dare
you

when I said

those three

little tiny words

I knew

it was a mistake

but I also knew

that Jason would jump

30 feet off a cliff

with shelfs of rock sticking out

of the freezing, snarling water

just to impress me

I called to him

trying to persuade him

to come down

but he didn't respond

as he poised to jump

I screamed his name

but just a second too late

my scream echoed

as he fell

faster and faster

when he hit the surface

it sounded

like gunfire

as my heart split in two

I hoped he would come up

whooping and laughing

and I'm pretty sure

my heart just about stopped

when he did

just that
