Life's bitter ruthless bride,
All unforgiving, by his side,
Conceiving all she deems essential,
Crops on reems of our potential;

Whyfore through the morning mist
Appears this forlorn ghost, aflame
In footsteps which no dew hath kist,
Upon his hopeless walk of shame?

My eye is clouded o'er,
All dry, no more to tear,
And shall my heart now toil no more
With shrinking from the fear?
...

When once the hopeless Sun into the sea doth drown,

And the deep and oily mantle darkly sets its grave,
...

Though I spit and fume, and bate against my jess,
To tear away impatiently to try and reach the sky,
I know it is because in joy I seem to have much less,
Than when I felt quite blest before my muse did fly;
...

This new beginning,
This vast and distant plain,
This endless desert,
Of blank white open space,
...

Knowing neither where to go
Nor even how to get there,
I follow the sign and spore
Of a few scattered footsteps,

When first we fall
We start to cry,
Not really knowing at all
Why.
