James Merrill was a tough one to crack. It took me 2 hours just to feel that I have a sense of what he might be talking about in the poem " The Octopus" . Then on top of understanding there is his use of clever rhyming in which every other line rhymes by removing one syllable or something to that effect. So reading and walking away with a lot are two different things. Reading his work and others like sure makes my balls shrink. My poetic balls that is.

Mike, I love that phrase! " my poetic balls..." and your " balls shrink." That's good poetry! Funny too. (I'm always a fan of funny) Nice!
