Hunger
Her home was gone
There was no shelter
Food was scarce
and
the
days
were
bitter
She looked up with those sad, empty eyes
Which were an ocean of the deep
A hole so wide nobody could ever crawl out
And a wanting for attention, the wanting so deep and true
That no one would ever turn away
I muster up my courage and
take the last loaf that would
satisfy my hunger and
give it to her
Her trembling hand almost snatches the bit of food
that might help her get
through the cold, harsh night
The night
One goes hungry, but the other is fed and happy
At least for a while
