I could feel you coming
A week before you came
And I danced with you
Inside me to the
Echo of your name

Ecstasy and rapture
Such intense anticipation
that, hungry for our future, I bore
Impatience with frustration.

I struggled to hold you safe
And strained to take the strain of
trying to contain you as
You kicked around my pain

You shifted, squirmed and huddled
as you prepared to leave, and I
with tears of happiness
Cuddled you and grieved

Our sudden separation which,
In one adrenalin rush,
With a push and a scream and a tear and a scratch
Was over in a gush.

All emotion left with you and
A void opened up in my head
Suspended in time and shock and awe,
Convinced that you were dead

But at last, there in reality
My first born has a face!
To fit the name, to fit the time,
Connect us with a happy place

Open eyes and flailing arms
Drinking all of me in
I whoop in celebration:
Now our life can begin!
