Today

Today there is a silence and a stillness
here in this holy place
The wind's whistle is a mere background
only heard at the edge of hearing,
And every noise a sudden disturbance
in the blanket of silence
Every motion a disturbance
in the mantle of stillness
which she wears

There is a sharpness of footsteps
A clanging of door hatches
A crunchiness in clothes
and a tapping of tiptoes

This place makes its own
demands upon our quietness
