WE EMERGED on earth from eternal skies
Whose nursing root is our efficient cause,
Where the song of angelic whistle flies
And all its creation to God gives pause.

O thou mortal thread of light-
Frail and flickering in the dark-
Fear not mortal winds that blow
And bend thy quaint and placid spark.

When last my heart gives way
To a melancholy,
When dim dark steals the day
And grief weeps of folly,

He wishes he could break his curse,
And shake the sins his passions nurse;
But here he lay- mere broken reed-
Iniquitous and full of need.

And know this, my Judean lord
‘Tis I that wash the guilted pure
Thy water and thy brazen bowl
They lack the potency to cure
...

… Truth is Beauty's outer speech
As Light's the outer speech of Heat-
And truth be told, one cannot teach
The place where Truth and Beauty meet.
