  • POEM: Nine Eleven Two Thousand And One by Tony Adah (9/12/2014 2:33:00 PM)

Believe it or not, I've seen worse. There's a thread of intense feeling here amid the clumsiness, the usage errors, the trite images and thoughts.

  • POEM: We are not there yet by C. Albert Andrews (1/3/2014 2:10:00 PM)

Albert, the problem with political poems and poems about social injustice is they too often turn into preaching, and usually preaching to the choir that already agrees with the poet. To me, fresh language and powerful, original images make a good poem. I like the fact you repeat We are not there yet because it shows you have a sense of form, that your words are trying to do more than convey an admirable sentiment. Your best stanza is the penultimate one (see my revision below): instead of bald statement, you use a metaphor that engages the reader's imagination AND delivers the message. You should focus your poetic efforts on imagery, metaphor, surprising diction.. If you're interested, I'll send you a list of good contemporary poets who might guide and inspire you. JC

[until] men and women of colour
    no longer creep
    but race across even plains
    We are not there yet

  • POEM: God's Grafitti by Charles Monroe (11/2/2013 12:23:00 PM)

Charles, pretty cool. I like the content, its precision and accuracy. As a poem though, it's a little undisciplined, with dead wood, flabby lines and weak images. If you could tighten it some, cut unexciting language, shape the lines into some energetic patterns, this could be a really fine poem. As raw material for something truly strong, it's promising.

PHumpers, I'm really tired of Lamont and Acker's pissing contest and the illiterate digressions of possibly fake ESL droolers here. It's become a true BORUM. I'm taking a break.

Perhaps, John. However, the great ones were dedicated to studying, working hard, taking criticism as a gift, in other words, they knew they were writing badly and accepted and valued intelligent if harsh comments. The worst poets here, led by Adam Snow, aren't interested in improving. They want praise or nothing. And, like Adam, they can't wait to self publish a collection of inept work. Jezus! What embarrassing vanity.
