Us

Sometimes,
I think that death may be the saddest thing ever,
Not mine,
Not even yours,
Just in general,
Just death.
But then I realize that death isn't the saddest thing ever,
Because then I think of how you take my breath away in every way imaginable,
With your voice, and your eyes, and your soul.
And then I start thinking about how you're obsessed with strawberries,
And how you like to sit and listen to music for hours,
And how you never get tired of talking.
(If only you were talking to me.)
And you would think all of those things are beautiful,
And they are, don't get me wrong,
But then those things make me think about us,
And how we will never be an "us, "
We will always just be "me" and "you, "
Separate, and never whole.
And I know that nothing will ever come of it,
But every time you pass me in the hall,
You take my breath away,
And I let my heart think that maybe, one day,
There will be an "us."
And knowing that's not possible is the saddest thing ever.
