A Cabeça de Corvo

Na mesa, quando em meio à noite lenta
Escrevo antes que o sono me adormeça,
Tenho o negro tinteiro que a cabeça
De um corvo representa.

A contemplá-lo mudamente fico
E numa dor atroz mais me concentro:
E entreabrindo-lhe o grande e fino bico,
Meto-lhe a pena pela goela a dentro.

E solitariamente, pouco a pouco,
Do bojo tiro a pena, rasa em tinta...
E a minha mão, que treme toda, pinta
Versos próprios de um louco.

E o aberto olhar vidrado da funesta
Ave que representa o meu tinteiro,
Vai-me seguindo a mão, que corre lesta.
Toda a tremer pelo papel inteiro.

Dizem-me todos que atirar eu devo
Trevas em fora este agoirento corvo,
Pois dele sangra o desespero torvo
Destes versos que escrevo.

For forty years from dawn to dark —
Alone beside Caermarthen Bay.
