Álvares de Azevedo

(12 September 1831 - 25 April 1852 / São Paulo)

Ai, Jesus!

Ai, Jesus! Não vês que gemo,
Que desmaio de paixão
Pelos teus olhos azuis?
Que empalideço, que tremo,
Que me expira o coração?
Ai, Jesus! Que por um olhar, donzela,
Eu poderia morrer
Dos teus olhos pela luz?
Que morte! Que morte bela!
Antes seria viver!
Ai, Jesus! Que por um beijo perdido
Eu de gozo morreria
Em teus níveos seios nus?
Que no oceano dum gemido
Minh'alma se afogaria? Ai, Jesus!

poet Alfred Lord Tennyson

It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole
Unequal laws unto a savage race,
