foghorns and shooting stars

why do we believe wishes may come true
when a wish come true ceases to exist?

a shooting star offers us a fleeting glimpse
of a life beyond our wildest dreams
it's here - it's gone
in the blink of an eye
an airy spirit, massive and rapid
and yet evading us
defying even contradiction

its sonic sister's sound
resonates with our yearnings
a deep longing vibration echoing inside us
long after its oscillations have faded
not less fleeting
concentric rings in some still water
and an unspoken promise of

I don't believe in wishes coming true
I would not want them to die that way
