À Jehin-Prume


Tu m'as vu souvent applaudir, entraîné
Par ta verve attendrie et ta grâce énergique,
Grand artiste inspiré que la noble Belgique,
En talents si féconde, un jour nous a donné.

Quand ton jeu sombre et doux, caressant ou tragique,
Berçait ou remuait l'auditeur fasciné,
Comme le nerf sonore, ami, j'ai frissonné
Bien des fois sous le coup de ton archet magique.

Et pourtant je sentais que l'ingrat instrument,
Sur lequel tu faisais vibrer si puissamment
Toute la passion qui te couvait dans l'âme,

Comme au poète ardent le rythme au son moqueur,
Ne répondait qu'à peine aux élans de ton cœur…
Mais, voyant le reflet, je devinais la flamme.
