À la mémoire de J.-N. Bienvenu


Ta tombe est maintenant morose et solitaire,
Ô Bienvenu, modeste ouvrier du devoir.
Et, seul, tu sens la neige et les frimas pleuvoir
Sur la terre où tu dors au fond du grand mystère.

Pourtant nul ne t'oublie, ô patriote austère,
Indomptable frondeur des abus du pouvoir ;
Et, devant ceux du jour, on s'étonne de voir
Ta plume se rouiller et ta bouche se taire.

Mais ta tâche est finie, ami, repose en paix
Sous les ombrages lourds et les gazons épais
Qui bientôt renaîtront au cimetière agreste.

Ne t'inquiète plus des luttes d'ici-bas :
Nous te succèderons dans les mêmes combats ;
Car, si tu n'es plus là, ton exemple nous reste !
