Vous l'avez donc connu notre pauvre exilé !
À travers les périls de l'océan qui gronde,
Pour promener ses pas errants autour du monde,
Loin du foyer, un jour, il s'en était allé.

Et quand le voyageur, las, souffrant, isolé,
Suspendit près de vous sa course vagabonde,
Laissant tomber sur lui votre pitié profonde,
Au nom d'un père absent vous l'avez consolé.

C'est ce père aujourd'hui, qui, penché sur la pierre
Humide encor des pleurs jaillis de sa paupière,
L'œil tourné vers son ciel pour jamais obscurci,

Dans l'âpre égarement de son âme en détresse,
Du bout des mers vous tend les bras, et vous adresse,
Entre deux longs sanglots, son douloureux merci !
