À ma petite Pauline. Le jour de sa première communion.


Qui donc ainsi te transfigure, ô ma Pauline ?
Quel nimbe dore ainsi ton sourire enfantin ?
Un timbre étrange vibre en ta voix cristalline :
Des immortels concerts est-ce un écho lointain ?

Aujourd'hui pourquoi donc à ta lèvre câline
Osé je à peine offrir mon baiser du matin ?
Ah ! c'est qu'après t'avoir admise au grand festin,
L'ombre auguste d'un Dieu sur ta tête s'incline.

Je sais sur toi planer l'immensité divine :
Dans tes yeux, pur miroir de ton âme, on devine
Que tu viens de gravir les éternels sommets.

Enfant, garde toujours cette ineffable empreinte !
Et que le souvenir de la céleste étreinte
Dans ton cher petit cœur ne s'efface jamais !
