'Alter Mann' is one of the most beautiful songs on the Sehnsucht album. The song is superficially about the death of an old man, but it also about the trial of becoming an individual. The old man nurses the narrator of the lyric, and when he frinally dies, the narrator does not know how to cope without his aid. He desperately wishes for him to return. the refrain itself reflects the growth of the narrator.
