In A Cage

She was sheltered from the world
Locked away in a cage
Protected from all its cruelty
All the hatred, all the rage

Placed in a cell since birth
Grew up living behind iron bar
Never allowed to experience life
Only got to watch it from afar

She grew from a little hatchling
To a beautiful bird
But none could see her fine feathers
Her song could not be heard

She saw the others learn to fly
She heard them call and sing
She wished she too was free and bindless
She yearned to stretch her wing

For far too long she was caged
Kept away from love and hate
One day she knew she would be set free
And too long she had to wait

Came the day she outgrew her cage
They had to unlock her gate
Finally, she was set free
However, it was too late

She could not adapt to freedom
She never learned to fly
Never had the chance to live
So as a free bird, could only die
