Beaten Footpaths Of Savannah
Beaten footpaths of Savannah
A.B. Mwalwanda May,2012
These familiar tracks with known origins and ends
Carry such palpable fate as the hangman's rope
Its noose awaits the condemned man's neck.
These beaten earth tracks
Run long or short on this rugged Savannah!
Criss-crossing in a labyrinth of human and animal pursuits
Beaten tracks trodden down by generations.
Zigzagging the landscape,
Evading deep valleys, high mountains and thickets.
Here and there stopped short by pregnant rivers for the
Weary sojourners to quench thirst and wash-off their dirt.
Oh! Patient yet beaten tracks
Witness to too many who march on your back,
Those soliloquising whilst on the move
Conspirators footing along your pavement.
It is lucid now, this is an endless pursuit
That as I tread through one of these now,
Imprinting my footprints on it, superimposing onto others before me
That their mark soon is rubbed off by wind or the next passes by!
