Helplessness (A Horse Story)

Little one born into helplessness
She didn't stand a chance that night
Her mother couldn't help her
For she had no milk for the little filly.

Little one born into helplessness
It was below freezing that night
Not knowing what to do for food
She wouldn't survive till the morning.

She didn't stand a chance that night
With the coyotes wandering around
Looking for anything to hunt
Little one born into helplessness.

Such a beautiful filly she was
Chestnut like her mother
With a star on her head like her father
But she wouldn't survive till the morning.

The farmer brought grain out to the horses
Something was wrong, because they didn't come
Walking down into the pasture
He found the little filly laying there.

Not knowing the mare was pregnant
He didn't know what to do
He couldn't let his daughter see
How the coyotes demolished her.

His heart ached for the little filly
Knowing she would never have survived
Even if he had found her the night before
The little one was born into helplessness.
