Love

In the time it takes for me to say 'I love you' you are gone-
There's an empty space where you once stood and I am all alone-
And I curse the day I met you,
And the day I fell in love.
If I'd known then what I know now,
I'd have turned around and run.
Because even when you're with me, all your thoughts are somewhere else
And I fight an uphill battle with your demons and yourself.

In the time it takes for me to say 'I need...' you turn away.
And there's nothing I can offer that will make you want to stay.
So I shout out my frustration,
And the hold you have on me -
And I try to keep my rage in check
And turn off what I feel-
Because even when you're near me all you see is someone else-
And I struggle to keep fighting with your demons and yourself.

So what makes me keep on fighting?
What makes me want to stay?
Is it just my stupid pride or is there something I can save?
I was hoping you could tell me
What I don't know for myself -
Am I wasting time? I'm wasting mine-
There's nothing left to tell.

Because in the time it takes for me to give up, you return-
You ask me to forgive you, tell me how much you have learned.
And you give me your devotion-
And your promise, once again
That if I can stand beside you
You'll find harmony again.
Because even when you've gone away, I'm all that you can see-
And your demons lose their strength as long as you are here with me.

So I help you keep on fighting-
I make you want to stay.
There's a secret place inside your heart that only I can save.
There is nothing I can tell you
That you haven't told yourself.
If you'll take the time, take all of mine
And find a place to dwell.
