That accepts duty to all
Citizens have rights
Some great, some small

In the not-so distant past
Workers had no rights
To achieve them they organised
To win them they had to fight

To reduce poverty is their stated goal
Yet the policies they demand
Always leave assisted countries
In a deeper, darker hole

If you pay peanuts
You get monkeys
It often has been said
But if you pay in truffles

In Egypt and Libya
And Syria and Bahrain
The cry goes up for freedom
And Freedom once again
...

We used to teach our children
The things that they should know
The skills that would enhance their lives
Whichever route they'd go
...

We elect our leaders
With our precious votes
They are supposed to serve us
The ordinary folk
...

They kept all of their money
And sold all of their debts
To poorer souls than they are
Under the rules they set.

Choice is such a lazy word
So easy to sell as virtue
It must be good I have heard
Even though it hurts you

Sixty odd years in the past
Many countries made a promise
Meant to last
They promised to protect
