Parasite

Dark tendrils travel under pale skin
Twisting, turning
They replace innocence with something icy and void.
Promises of pain swirl,
Growing and entwining until they reach their goal.

Fear cripples you as their claws hook into your vital organs.
Your heart. your brain.
They latch on like leaches and start to drain.

It burrows deeper over time,
Allows you to believe you're still you,
Until one day you're awoken to see just how much it grew.

It's heavy, dragging you down.
You struggle and panic afraid you may drown.

There will be good days and bad.
You'll be tricked into thinking everything's okay,
Then it'll be ripped out from under you and you'll fall flat on your face.

Each time the tendrils will tighten and drain more of you away,
Until there's no amount of words, hope or life that'll get you through the day.

It's a part of you now.
You have no choice but to believe it's lies.
"Stay quiet" it says "Don't scream, no one wants to hear your cries."

You do as your told,
Cold and compliant,
As it tightens its hold,
You suffer in silence.

It'll force you to be strong
It'll make you crumble to your knees, begging for release.
Then it'll push you to stand,
Wiping away evidence of tears with the back of your own hand.

Maybe someone will notice, but nothing will change
For your sunken features will morph into a twisted smile and you'll hear yourself say;
"I'm fine, nothings wrong. I swear, i'm okay."
